how can you not

how can you not pass through
the hole of a wedding ring
when your hand is in his lap,
his hands branding
your senses with promises?

what would draw you
to a union of souls,
when apparently
the union of bodies don’t?

take my advice, my friend:
allow yourself not to burn
with the wrong fuel,
lest the Consuming Fire
gives in to your desired burning.

my thoughts of you

my thoughts quiver and shiver
in the un-thought of another.
in the silence of the heart,
they have grown unease
filled to the brim
with bare words.

my vocabulary stretches
to embrace the niche
of our hushed banter,
as I watch notes
wrap around your fingers,
your spirit rising
at every pound in the keys.

then my eyes scout the skin
of your hands,
gauging the roughness
of your palms,
considering whether
they were as your eyes are.

the senseless ways
of the opposite
is unmatched in us,
periodically punctuated
by strings of platitudes.

I’m done distinguishing
fact from fiction, though.
yet you would still wonder:
how long should I continue
wrapping words,
stifling the heart
with music-less sheets?

The Holiest of PDAs

They knelt together – the pastor and his wife. I’ve never seen such amazing public display of affection as in the case of this couple praying in this humble position. Before the Lord, laying down their hearts, they’ve never looked so perfect together. A couple of times, I’ve caught glimpses of them sharing what the Lord has impressed upon them. In my heart, I know the Lord is speaking to them, answering them faithfully in their queries.

This was during the offertory, when people with special concerns can lay them before God through kneeling. The pastor’s wife would often be amongst the first to come forward. Hers is a heart for the Lord. But this day, this day was different. Instead of just her, he, too, knelt before the Lord. I didn’t quite catch how they communicated to just kneel beside one another. It just happened as if it was so natural for them to know each other’s thoughts.

And so, he and she were there in the kneelers together with all others seeking God’s heart. Like the rest of us, they needed God to speak to them in such special way. The minister joined the rest of the sheep who needed ministering. In this moment of shared humility, God’s chosen leader for the Vesper service has never ministered so well.

Side note: I wanted to take a picture of them in this position. For a fact, I have access to a DSLR at the time. I just chose not to. This was a moment of shared intimacy. Let it be that this moment is impressed more in my heart than in my mind.
